Insurance Council of Australia roundtable on striking the right regulatory balance - October 2025

APRA Chair John Lonsdale delivered opening remarks at the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) CEO roundtable on striking the right regulatory balance which was held on 30 October 2025. Mr Lonsdale welcomed views from executives from the general insurance industry and was joined by APRA colleagues and senior representatives from the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC).

At the roundtable, Mr Lonsdale provided an overview of APRA’s strategic priority of getting the regulatory balance right, explaining how APRA is seeking to minimise any undue cost of regulation for industry through targeted changes to its prudential framework. Mr Lonsdale also highlighted emerging risks for the sector including geopolitical risks and a deteriorating cyber threat landscape.

Mr Lonsdale encouraged executives to identify examples of how regulatory frameworks could be improved to better support productivity. Executives were able to share their insights and perspectives, including suggesting opportunities for enhanced coordination across regulators.

APRA looks forward to maintaining a close and open dialogue with industry and peer regulators, as we work together to ensure APRA’s approach is risk-based and proportionate.
