APRA defers development of enhanced superannuation statistics

Friday, 06 November 2009
No. 09.37
For Immediate Release

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has deferred the update of its superannuation statistical collections and publications pending the outcome of the Review into the Governance, Efficiency, Structure and Operation of Australia’s Superannuation System (the Cooper Review).

APRA began its review by inviting comments on a discussion paper, Enhanced APRA superannuation statistics collection, released on 25 May 2009.

The Government announced the Cooper Review on 29 May 2009.  As part of its inquiry, the Review will examine the issues surrounding the collection and publication of superannuation data.

APRA will consider any findings from the Cooper Review as well as the feedback interested parties have provided to APRA on the 25 May discussion paper.

The Cooper Review is expected to deliver its final report to Government in June 2010.  APRA will review the timeframe for the enhanced collection after the report is released.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is the prudential regulator of the financial services industry. It oversees banks, credit unions, building societies, general insurance and reinsurance companies, life insurance, friendly societies, and most members of the superannuation industry. APRA is funded largely by the industries that it supervises. It was established on 1 July 1998. APRA currently supervises institutions holding approximately $3.6 trillion in assets for 22 million Australian depositors, policyholders and superannuation fund members.
