APRA appoints a new Executive General Manager

Wednesday, 28 May 2008
No. 08.13
For Immediate Release

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) today announced the appointment of Mr Keith Chapman to the role of Executive General Manager – Supervisory Support Division.

Mr Chapman’s appointment is effective from June 2008. He succeeds Mr Tom Karp who is retiring on 27 June after a long and distinguished career in financial services and financial services supervision.

The Supervisory Support Division comprises a range of specialist and technical support teams whose collective role is to provide expert advice, analysis and other support to the front-line areas of APRA responsible for prudential supervision of regulated entities. The division also contains APRA’s enforcement unit.

Mr Chapman, who currently holds the position of General Manager, Policy Development, within APRA, has been with APRA since its formation nearly 10 years ago.  He joined the Insurance and Superannuation Commission (ISC), a predecessor agency of APRA, in Canberra in 1988 and, during his time at the ISC, worked in the life insurance and superannuation areas. In 1998 he was Deputy Commissioner for Superannuation.

Since joining APRA on its formation in 1998, Mr Chapman has occupied numerous senior roles covering a wide range of responsibilities. He has worked as a front-line general manager responsible for supervising medium and large companies in all APRA regulated industries.  He has also been chair of APRA’s cross-divisional ADI, licensing, superannuation and general insurance groups.

Mr Chapman has Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science degrees from the Australian National University in Canberra.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is the prudential regulator of the financial services industry. It oversees banks, credit unions, building societies, general insurance and reinsurance companies, life insurance, friendly societies, and most members of the superannuation industry. APRA is funded largely by the industries that it supervises. It was established on 1 July 1998. APRA currently supervises institutions holding approximately $3 trillion in assets for 21 million Australian depositors, policyholders and superannuation fund members.
