APRA appoints new Head of Research

Monday, 03 September 2007
No. 07.42
For Immediate Release

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Katrina Ellis as its new Head of Research.

Dr Ellis is currently Associate Professor of Finance at the University of California Davis. Originally from Adelaide, Dr. Ellis undertook her post‑graduate training as a Fulbright Scholar at Cornell University, where she earned a PhD in Management. She had earlier obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Honours) from the University of Adelaide.

Dr Ellis has also worked at the Australian Graduate School of Management as a Senior Lecturer in Finance and, early in her career, at Macquarie Bank as a quantitative analyst in foreign exchange derivatives.

Dr Ellis’s work has been published in a number of leading academic journals, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. In addition, she has for the past two years published the “UC Davis Study of California Women Business Leaders”.

In recent years, APRA’s applied research team has generated valuable insights into areas of prudential policy interest for APRA, including credit risk in housing lending and superannuation trustee behaviour. APRA intends to grow and broaden its applied research activities under Dr Ellis’s leadership.

APRA’s former Head of Research, Dr. Neil Esho, has been seconded to the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision with the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland. He is expected to return to APRA in another senior role in 2009.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is the prudential regulator of the financial services industry. It oversees banks, credit unions, building societies, general insurance and reinsurance companies, life insurance, friendly societies, and most members of the superannuation industry. APRA is funded largely by the industries that it supervises. It was established on 1 July 1998. APRA currently supervises institutions holding approximately $2.5 trillion in assets for 20 million Australian depositors, policyholders and superannuation fund members.
