APRA releases statistics on the provision of banking services

Thursday, 11 November 2004
No. 04.45
For Immediate Release

The 2003/2004 edition of the ADI Points of Presence statistics released today by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) shows a one per cent increase in the total number of face-to-face service facilities offered by ADIs across Australia over the twelve months to 30 June 2004.

The number of these facilities (including giroPost outlets) rose over the year from 12,969 to 13,095 at 30 June 2004, an increase of 126.

Bank face-to-face service facilities rose by 102 (one per cent) over the year while the number of credit union and building society facilities decreased by 70.

The majority of increases in face-to-face service points occurred in highly accessible and accessible regions in Australia with increases of 63 (one per cent) and 54 (two per cent,) respectively. In very remote areas, face-to-face service points increased by ten, or by three per cent, over the year.

The number of face-to-face service facilities offering a branch level of service rose over the year by 22, from 6,106 to 6,128.

The ADI Points of Presence collection requires banks, building societies and credit unions to provide data on the locations and type of banking services they offer.

A copy of the latest edition of ADI Points of Presence and all of the data collected from AIDs are available on APRA’s Website at www.apra.gov.au/Statistics/Points-of-Presence.cfm.

The data are augmented with the Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA).
The Index provides a classification of postcodes according to accessibility and helps describe the change in access to banking services in regional and remote areas of Australia.
