No. 03.18
For Immediate Release

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has awarded four scholarships to honours year students under the Brian Gray Scholarship Program.

The Program was established by APRA and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in September 2002 in memory of APRAs former Executive General Manager, Policy Research and Consulting, Mr Brian Gray.

Mr Gray spent more than two decades shaping public policy in Australia and was also actively involved in promoting the work of graduate staff in his role at the RBA and later at APRA.

Brian Gray Scholarships for 2003 have been awarded to:

Tomasz Dudek, University of Melbourne (Honours in Actuarial Studies)

Maximilian Layton, Macquarie University (Honours in Economics)

Nina Lazarevic, University of Sydney (Honours in Econometrics) and

Christian Sutherland-Wong, University of NSW (Honours in Actuarial Studies).

Recipients of the scholarships were able to demonstrate a blend of strong academic results with an interest in issues relevant to financial institutions.

The Brian Gray Scholarship Program funds four scholarships annually to the value of $12,500 each.  While the Program focuses on honours year students, postgraduate students can also apply.  It is open to Australian/New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, who are currently studying a topic of relevance to prudential regulation.

The broad range of topics includes the economics of regulation and prudential supervision of banking, insurance and superannuation as well as studies related to econometric and statistical databases.

Recipients of the scholarship program will devote a substantial amount of time to an agreed research topic.

APRA is the prudential regulator of the financial services industry including banks, credit unions, building societies, general insurance and reinsurance companies, life insurance, friendly societies, and most members of the superannuation industry. It currently regulates $1.5 trillion in assets for 20 million Australians.
