General Insurance Claims Development Statistics

The General Insurance Claims Development Statistics publication contains industry-level claims development statistics by class of business. The publication also includes summaries of movements in the ultimate cost of claims for selected major classes of business.

Current issue
The publication is available in three versions: summary reserve release/strengthening statistics for selected major classes of business, individual class of business excel reports which enable users to access and analyse full claims development tables across each class of business, and a database version (in a Microsoft Excel file) which contains additional statistics and can be used for further analysis. A set of explanatory notes and a glossary to assist the reader in understanding the definitions of data included in the publication are also available at the links below.

Selected feature - Claims development in CTP motor vehicle insurance
On 15 June 2016, APRA released a selected feature on Claims development in CTP motor vehicle insurance available here. This feature described emerging trends in CTP insurance. It also highlighted how some of the key statistics published in the General Insurance Claims Development Statistics publication can be interpreted and used.  
Consultation on general insurance statistics
On 15 June 2016, APRA released a discussion paper outlining proposed changes to APRA's general insurance statistical publications. The discussion paper is available here.
On 13 February 2017, APRA released a response to submissions available here.
APRA welcomes feedback on the new statistics and encourages industry and other stakeholders to review the information that is published for accuracy and consistency, so that the quality of the data collection and publications continues to be enhanced.

The next edition of the General Insurance Claims Development Statistics publication will be released on this webpage by close of business on the following date:

Data in this publication are sourced from regulatory returns submitted to APRA under the Financial Sector (Collection of Data) Act 2001 by authorised General Insurance companies. Statistics on Lloyd's Australian operations are not included in this publication.
